It has been 119 years since Joshua Houston's son Samuel Walker Houston founded the Samuel Houston Industrial and Training School in Walker County Texas. It was by no means an easy task to say the least. Professor Houston persevered and built his school in the rural community of Galilee that would later become the first and the only African American High school in Huntsville and Walker County, Texas.
February 22, 2025 marks 161st birthday of the this great educator. The Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center celebrates this birthday yearly by a "Laying of the Wreath Ceremony" at the grave site of Professor Houston located in the Oakwood Cemetery at 11:00am. Following this ceremony a reception at the Cultural Center is held.
We encourage all who are interested to attend and help us honor and give thanks to this great pioneer of education in the African American community.
